London's King of balayage is standing up for brunettes. I read a survey the other day that said two in every three women who colour their hair, colour it at home. Why? Some say it's the hike in prices or the rise in demand for that 'undone' look. But in my opinion, a large contributing factor is that salons alienate brunettes. Blondes have always had more options (from beach to bleach and everything in between) but for brunettes, colouring isn't well communicated in salons/duty than beauty that monthly root appointment or perhaps an ombre for summer (again more blonde). Can anyone go ice blonde?
Yes, anyone can do it - obviously it takes longer on darker hair but it is still achievable. You might just need two colour applications but these can be done on the same day, depending on the sensitivity of your scalp.
How much upkeep is involved?
You'll need to come back into the salon at monthly intervals - as soon as you have more than half an inch of regrowth, the keratin in the hair strengthens meaning it won't lift as easily and will take more time to colour, costing you more.
Should it always be done as block colour?
Yes, it's a strong but very sexy look and works best as a block colour with no highlights.
How can you maintain the colour between appointments?
Hair health is extra important for statement blondes, so I would recommend having regular treatments and using Viviscal Professional Hair Supplements. Your locks will need a good balance of moisture and protein - but take care, as too much protein can cause hair to snap.
